Tzvetan Todorov's Narrative Theory

Last week we've learn about narrative in class. In the Todorov's theory, narrative is divided into three parts;

1. The 1st act/ Beginning

Where characters and the setting is introduce

2. The 2nd act/ Middle

Where a problem will arise

3. The 3rd act/ Ending

Where the problems are solved in the end

Narrative is also divided into 5 stages:

  1. Equilibrium = Where everything is how it is normally be

  2. Disruption of equilibrium = Where a problem occur

  3. Recognition of disruption = Where the character realize that the problem needs to be solve

  4. Repair = Where the character fixes the problem

  5. New equilibrium = Where the problem is solved and everything is back to normal. Some films also have new norm at the end where something new happens which might be the characters 'new normal'

For example, the movie Trolls 2: World Tour

Equilibrium; Poppy was the queen and as always, singing and dancing with the other trolls.

Disruption of Equilibrium; When a weird looking troll bat came with a letter to Poppy about a world tour and 'reuniting' all the different music genre trolls together. Poppy's father knew that it was not a good idea due to the past that lead all the music genre trolls separated.

Recognition of Disruption; Poppy thought it would be a good idea if she can reunite all the trolls and become one big family. She travelled to different trolls island to reunite with them but was attack multiple times. At the end, the queen of rock managed to capture them all and decided to make the other music genre trolls part of her genre too which lead to extinction of music.

Repair; Music was back again when trolls notice that music is within them. They all created their own rhythm and sang together and reunited.

New equilibrium; All the trolls made peace with each other with the fact they all share different music genre.
