Steve Neale's Genre Theory

Genre is a style or category that is used for films, art, music or literature. In Neale's theory, he believes that genre is divided into two parts; the repetition/ conventions and the differences/ subversions.

Some examples of genre are;

  • Action

  • Crime

  • Comedy

  • Documentary

  • Fantasy

  • Horror

  • Musical

  • Romance

  • Sci-fi

  • Thriller

  • War

  • and many more!

Conventions are things that are familiar to the audience and repeatedly used over time in films. What are the conventions in the genre?

For example in action films there is always a hero and villians, secret identity of the hero, headquarters, a mask to hide and cover the face of the hero, damage facilities and buildings, and many more.

Some films challenged the convention to make the movie more unique and different. For example in Spider-man: Homecoming. Most action films, the main character/hero is always chasing and saving for the girl they love and the other Spider-man films, Peter Parker is also chasing and saving the girl he loves. But in Spider-man: Homecoming, the Peter Parker did had a love interest but the film was more focus on him trying to be the perfect Spider-man and trying to please Mr. Stark (Iron Man).

Some film can include other genre such as the film, How to Train Your Dragon the movie series. Not only was the film genre was fantasy but it had other genre too such as action, romance and war. Producers mix the genre to get the attention of other genre lovers and to make the movie more interesting and original.
